The Casbah of Algiers is a beautiful icon in the Algerian capital, recognized by the UNESCO in 1992 as world heritage and described as one of the most beautiful locations overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The city was built on a mountain in the 16th century, between 1516 and 1592 as a headquarters for the Ottoman leader and a military base tasked with protecting Algeria. The city had several gates on all four sides. Casbah had many palaces, 109 mosques, 32 shrines, a total of 166 religious monuments upon the French colonization. - KUNA
