KUWAIT: The Criminal Court deferred a hearing into the "Abdaly cell" terrorism case, in which 26 defendants are involved, to Oct 11 for further questioning of the accused. The court held its first hearing on Aug 16 to examine the case sent to it by the court of appeals. On Jan 12, 2016, the criminal court sentenced two of the defendants, the first and the 23rd on the list of defendants, to death, while one of the accused was sentenced to life imprisonment. Other defendants in the case received sentences from five, 10 and 15 years in prison. In Sept 2015, the public prosecutor lodged criminal charges against the terrorist cell, in which the 26 defendants were put on trial over possession of huge caches of weapons and ammunition, as well as allegedly spying for Iran and Hezbollah.

Manager banned

A remand judge yesterday released the manager of Kuwait health office in Washington on KD 500 bail and banned her from leaving Kuwait. The defendant, a female citizen, denied all charges after being detained for 21 days over embezzlement charges.

Suspicions of squandering

Minister of Electricity and Water Ahmed Al-Jassar yesterday referred a contract to supply spare parts for a power plant to the public prosecution to investigate suspicions of squandering of public funds, as pointed out by MP Ali Al-Khamees. After receiving the information, Jassar formed an investigation committee which verified the suspicions, before he referred the matter to the public prosecution.

Islamic teachers demonstrated

A group of Islamic Education teachers yesterday demonstrated at MoE headquarters in protest over delays in promoting them to higher positions, said informed sources, noting that the demonstrators dispersed after getting promises to resolve the problem by Oct 15.

Kuwait Democratic Platform

Kuwait Democratic Platform (KDP) yesterday criticized the decision of sending blogger Sara Al-Derees to the central prison although she denied all charges and willingly gave herself up. "She should have been released after interrogation, leaving the final decision about the charges she is facing to the court," KDP added, noting the increase in the maximum period of detaining bloggers from 4 to 21 days is a means to intimidate them along with other political activists. The Kuwait Progressive Bloc also said that oppressing liberties, namely the freedom of opinion and expression, has become a habit of the authorities.

'I want To Learn'

Chairperson of the 'hospital school' initiative 'I want To Learn' Dr Mona Borhamah said that the first conference of the initiative would be held at Kuwait Regency Hotel for two days starting Friday, Sept 30, 2016. She added that all specialists as well as parents of ill students are invited. Borhamah added that the conference will focus on shedding light on the significance of a hospital school so that all hospitalized students could carry on with their studies while being treated.

Kuwait-Sudan ties

Minister of Social Affairs and Labor and Minister of State for Planning and Development Hind Al-Subaih yesterday received her Sudanese counterpart Dr Al-Sadeq Al-Hadi Al-Mahdi at her office, where they discussed bilateral cooperation and deep-rooted historic relations.

Demand for plastic surgeries

Burns and plastic surgery specialist at the Babtain Burns Center Dr Mohammed Abdul Samad Abdul Kareem said demand was growing in Kuwait for plastic surgeries, namely fillers and Botox amongst Kuwait women aged 40-45. Speaking on the sidelines of a workshop organized by Bader Al-Sultan & Brothers Co in collaboration with MoH under the title 'Filler Use Updates', Abdul Kareem said filler technology was rapidly developing and that it could be used by men and women of all ages.

Fishermen appeal to PAAAFR

Kuwait Fishermen Union yesterday appealed to PAAAFR to extend the period of cage fishing, locally known as 'gargour', to six months.

'Improper dress'

A court yesterday ordered an expat to leave the courtroom because he was improperly dressed.
