KUWAIT: The official spokesperson of the Environment Public Authority and Director of Public Relations and Media Department Sheikha Al-Ibrahim said the authority's teams on Saturday discovered several violations in factories in the western industrial area of Shuaiba and citations were issued against violators of the environmental protection law. Ibrahim explained to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that article 18 stipulates that "all establishments shall comply with all engineering and environmental requirements determined by the executive regulations of this law", indicating that the penalty for violating this article is a fine of not less than KD 5,000 and not more than KD 50,000.

Article 31 stipulates that "the sources from which hazardous waste, healthcare waste or sludge are generated, in addition to the competent authorities in charge of collecting, transporting and disposing of waste of all kinds, shall be obliged to provide the authority with the details of these wastes while maintaining a special record, and the executive regulations of this law shall specify the required data and the mechanism for their transport and management."

The penalty for violating article 31 is imprisonment of a period of not less than one year and not more than three years and a fine of not less than KD 10,000 and not more than KD 50,000 or one of these two penalties. Article 73 states that "all industrial, commercial, tourist, private housing and other establishments, whether governmental or non-governmental, are prohibited from discharging any materials, wastes or liquids that would cause pollution to the beaches or waters adjacent to them, whether voluntarily or involuntarily, directly or indirectly."

The penalty of article 73 is imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months and a fine of not less than KD 50,000 and not more than KD 200,000, or one of these two penalties, for anyone who intentionally causes pollution in marine areas mentioned in article 68 of this law in violation of the provisions of articles 71, 72, 73, 74, 75 and 76.

Ibrahim explained the penalty of article 73 is a fine of not less than KD 30,000 and not more than KD 150,000 for anyone who inadvertently pollutes marine areas mentioned in article 68 of this law in violation of the provisions of articles 72, 73, 74, 75 and 76. Ibrahim called on everyone to abide by the environmental protection law and its executive regulations so as not to be subjected to legal accountability, stressing the continuation of the authority teams' inspection campaigns on factories and facilities in all regions of Kuwait. - KUNA
