KATY, Texas: A recently fired employee opened fire at a transportation company near Houston on Wednesday, killing one employee and injuring another before fatally shooting himself, sheriff's officials said.

The gunman was fired earlier in the day and then returned with a shotgun to the Knight Transportation office in Katy, about 20 miles west of Houston, said Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman. "He parked right outside the building and came straight in," the sheriff said.

Hickman said the man opened fire and fatally shot one person, who was found dead at the scene by responding officers. Another person was injured during the shooting, though the person wasn't shot and declined medical treatment, the sheriff said. "Ultimately the suspect took his own life," Hickman said.

The sheriff didn't release the name of the gunman or the victims. He said one deputy injured his knee during the incident. Numerous patrol vehicles surrounded the facility as deputies responded to reports of gunfire. A message left with Knight Transportation also wasn't immediately returned. Hickman had no information how long the man had been employed by the Phoenix-based company, which provides truckload transportation services.

A nearby high school went on lockdown for about an hour as a precaution, said Denisse Cantu, a spokeswoman with the Katy Independent School District. She said three other district campuses also were briefly closed during the incident.-AP
