KUWAIT: Ahmadi detectives recently launched an inspection campaign in Fintas, Fahaheel and Sabahiya, which resulted in arresting five people who had been wanted for various cases and impounding the vehicle of a reckless driver, said security sources. Adding that another campaign in Mahboula resulted in arresting three fugitives, impounding three vehicles and filing five traffic citations. Meanwhile, Ahmadi traffic police yesterday launched an inspection campaign in the governorate's areas that resulted in arresting 25 juveniles driving without driving licenses.

Foul play suspected in Qurain house fire

A Kuwaiti family narrowly escaped death when a fire broke out in their house in Qurain. The fire started in the early hours of morning when all residents were asleep, said security sources, noting that the fire started in the diwaniya. According to the sources, firemen managed to control the fire within 25 minutes and rescued five family members plus a housekeeper. Initial reports showed that the fire was an act of arson. A case was filed and further investigations are in progress. In other cases, a fire recently broke out in a house in Ahamdi, said security sources, noting that initial reports suggested that the fire was caused by an electric short circuit. The fire was controlled and no casualties were reported. Separately, Jleeb Al-Shuyiukh firefighters controlled a fire that broke out in an electric transformer outside a house, said security sources, noting that no casualties were reported.

Closed companies

Residency affairs department detectives found that 351 laborers were sponsored by 15 companies supposedly headquartered in Sharq that were later found already closed, said security sources. They noted that the 15 companies were blacklisted and the owners are being summoned for failure to follow proper legal procedures after the companies' closure.

Environmental law

In collaboration with Environment Public Authority (EPA) and Ministry of Public Works (MPW), environment police recently referred a commercial tower's administration in Kuwait City to public prosecution for violating architectural conditions and the environment protection law, said security sources. Case papers indicate that the MPW had filed a complaint against the tower's administration for violating environmental regulations by connecting the tower's drainage system directly to seawater, which poses considerable pollution to seawater and damage to national fish resources. A case was filed.

'Prison riot' explained

Commenting on recent media reports about an alleged riot in which a female inmate attacked prison guards, the Ministry of Interior's assistant undersecretary for correctional facilities Maj Gen Khaled Al-Deyyeen stressed that what happened was an individual incident committed by a woman sentenced for 20 years for drug trafficking, assault, robbery, threats and physical assault. Deyyeen explained that prison guards were in the process of a routine search in the ward and found a mobile phone with the prisoner. He added that on confiscating it, she started a fight, assaulting them and other inmates as well as nurses who were medically examining them, taking advantage of the open ward doors. Deyyeen added that this prisoner had been known to be a very violent and aggressive person and that she was charged while in prison for assault, assault with a fire extinguisher, suicide attempt and destroying public property by arson.

Impounded cars' auction

The Ministry of Interior's traffic directorate announced its intention to hold a public auction to sell a number of vehicles that had been impounded at the ministry's yards at Kuwait Public Transportation Company, Mina Abdullah and Ahmadi. The auction will be held at 4:00 pm on Feb 17, 2016 at the impoundment section. The directorate added that involved vehicles' license plate numbers and owners' names had been published in local press, radio and TV on Monday, Dec 7, 2015, giving the owners a fortnight to check with the committee. Those interested to take part in the auction have to check with the impoundment garage at least one day prior to the auction day to examine the vehicles.
