KUWAIT: Ministry of Electricity and Water ’s Undersecretary Mohammad Bushehri said the “idea of creating categories for consumption is in harmony with the idea of fair distribution of subsidies, especially under the growing consumption pattern with all types of consumers, be it private, investment, commercial or industrial sectors.” He said the “numbers show the average consumption of power in Kuwait is nearly 15,700 kW, and ranks first in the world, while in water we are third with a daily consumption rate of 500 liters, although we are categorized as the second poorest country in freshwater resources after Mauritania.”

Bushehri said the ministry works on more than one aspect to guarantee rationalization of power and water consumption in various sectors, adding that the tariff of consumption categories being currently proposed is one of those aspects, in addition to the awareness campaigns the ministry organizes in this regard. He added there is coordination with the ministry of commerce to implement the new building code and consume less air conditioning.

Bushehri said that it is wise to reconsider the way power and water is consumed, adding the ministry is also working on renewable energy and materials for lighting and air conditioning, adding that the “ministry has several tools, if they are activated, to achieve what it is looking for.” — Al-Rai
