Ministry of Electricity and Water to lay off 34% of expats

KUWAIT: The power plants’ operation and maintenance sector at the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) has already started cutting expenses and reducing the number of expat technicians, Assistant Undersecretary for Power Plants’ Operation and Maintenance Fuad Al-Oun said. Oun explained that the sector would reduce 34 percent of the total number of laborers working in operation and maintenance.

He also noted that the decision was made after Kuwaiti workers scored high in performance assessment reports for 2015 where 81 percent of them received ‘excellent’ reports and 13 percent received ‘very good’ ones. “This shows that national workers are now reliable enough to run the sector efficiently without the need to increase the number of expats,” Oun stressed, noting that the decision would help save around KD 3 million from the budget of one tender alone and that further millions would be saved when the same is applied to other tenders. – Al-Rai
