KUWAIT: With the beginning of the 17th legislative term of the National Assembly, members of legislature authority realize responsibilities to combat the spread of drugs by strengthening the legislative system. The Kuwait constitution gave MPs several powers to control and carry out their responsibilities in combating drugs, and provide support for the ministry of interiors and its various sectors and relevant authorities, especially after the phenomenon has grown and spread widely.

In this regard, a number of parliamentarians stressed in statements to (KUNA) the importance of combating drugs, addressing its various causes, and strengthening the deterrent legislative system in this regard. The members also expressed support for the continuation of the tireless work to detect these crimes, and cooperate with the competent authorities in studying this problem in order to limit its spread, and strengthen prevention programs at various intellectual, social, psychological, security and legislative levels.

In a statement to KUNA, MP Dr Adel Al-Damkhi stressed the importance of establishing an apparatus that includes the various sectors and ministries concerned with drug control to develop plans and work mechanisms to combat drug. He praised the "great" and remarkable efforts made by the Ministry of Interior in its various sectors in combating the scourge of drugs, pointing to the "unprecedented" quantities that were detected in the past periods, which reflect these "great" efforts.

For his part, MP Fares Al-Otaibi said that the Ministry of Interior is working to protect society, and stressed the importance of joint and integrated work from all state departments, ministries, clinics, customs, ports and borders security and all concerned authorities. He expressed complete readiness to present all the necessary legislation, being a member of the National Assembly, to solve this crisis and save Kuwait's young men and women from these "great dangers and violent scourge."

In a similar statement to (KUNA), Representative Khalil Al-Saleh said that confronting the scourge of drugs is a joint societal responsibility by the family and the state through its social platforms, Media, Education, and ministries to intensify religious, health and community awareness campaigns for this "destructive" scourge of young minds.

He indicated that the size and number of recent seizures confirms that the State of Kuwait is being targeted, stressing the need to continue combating this "destructive" scourge through "tight" plans to deter anyone who tries to target the country. He praised the great efforts made by the various state agencies in confronting drug dealers who aim to "destroy" Kuwait's youth.

For his part, MP Hamdan Al-Azmi said that the most important ways to limit the spread of drugs is through raising awareness at all levels, referring to the role of the family, schools and educational establishment, and state ministries. He stressed the importance of applying deterrent laws and the existence of a fair trial that punishes drug traffickers, calling on the Ministry of Interior to intensify security campaigns at the sea, air and land ports to prevent the entry of such destructive substances for the minds of young people and their future.

On the other hand, MP Alia Al-Khaled said that drug control must be based on a multifaceted strategy that includes awareness, treatment, and security, in addition to studying and researching the reasons that led to the spread of narcotics. She focused on the importance of cooperation between the legislative and executive authorities to confront the scourge of drugs and make legislative amendments whenever necessary to fill and address any legislative gap. Al-Khaled stressed the importance of having a center or international hospital specialized in treatment of addiction and drug abuse to rehabilitate addicts to overcome that stage and continue in recovery.

She also stressed the need for coordination between ministries, state institutions, associations and public in studying the spread of drugs and protecting young people, as they are the future youth generation. Al-Khaled praised the efforts of the Ministry of the Interior in combating this scourge, indicating the importance of knowing the security capabilities and security system and coordination with other countries to monitor any attempts to smuggle drugs into the country through the exchange of information. - KUNA
