The sick Grammy winner was to be the featured performer at the glitzy event, which honored filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and artist James Turrell. The writing is on the wall: Sam Smith didn't show up for his scheduled performance last night at LACMA's fifth annual Art + Film Gala. Museum rep, Miranda Carroll, tells THR that the Grammy-winning singer was under the weather this weekend and had to cancel. "Sam Smith has fallen ill and regretfully was unable to perform tonight at the LACMA Art + Film Gala. He was required to go on vocal rest," Carroll said. According to sources, the Grammy-winning singer informed gala organizers sometime in the late afternoon that he wouldn't be able to make it. A rep for Smith did not respond to a request. Fortunately, Joe Walsh stepped in and performed at the Gucci-sponsored event, which brings together the film and art worlds in one gathering to raise funds for the museum and its film-related programming and exhibitions. "Well, here I am. I'm glad to be here, I think," Walsh joked onstage. "I'm just gonna play a couple songs, and we'll see what happens."

Smith might not have been at the event honoring filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and artist James Turrell, but plenty of other power players were. Joining LACMA CEO Michael Govan, co-chairs Eva Chow and Leonardo DiCaprio were Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Jared Leto, Kim Kardashian, Salma Hayek Pinault, Diane Kruger, Joshua Jackson, Chloe Sevigny, Dakota Johnson, Saoirse Ronan, Usher, Gia Coppola, Brit Marling, Jacqui Getty, Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Jason Statham and Aaron and Sam Taylor Johnson. Industry players included Bob Iger, Brad Grey, Jim Gianopulos, Ted Sarandos, Richard Lovett, Brian Grazer and others.

Despite the sudden illness, it's already a big weekend for Smith. He's featured in the new James Bond entry, Spectre, courtesy of his song "Writing's on the Wall." During the cocktail portion of the evening, which preceded the gala dinner and awards presentation, Universal Music Group chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge told The Hollywood Reporter that he was looking forward to hearing Smith perform. "I always love hearing him," Grainge said of Smith, an artist under his UMG umbrella. Smith recently performed for Grainge at the Nov 5 Spirit of Life gala in Santa Monica, a benefit for City of Hope which honored the music industry veteran. Other musical artists who have taken the stage at previous Art + Film galas include Stevie Wonder, Florence + the Machine, Sting and Culture Club.-www.hollywoodreporter.com
