KUWAIT: Kuwait Science Club announced the winners of the eighth Kuwait Science and Engineering Competition, which resulted in the victory of 10 scientific projects by 16 students out of 54 scientific projects submitted by 94 students belonging to 35 middle and secondary schools. In a press statement on Monday, the Chairman of the Club Talal Al-Kharafi, expressed his great happiness at the success of the eighth Kuwait Science and Engineering Competition, which is one of the main events of the National Program for the Welfare of Young Researchers and Innovators launched by Talal Al-Kharafi since 2015.

Kharafi said the success of the competition came as a result of concerted efforts between the club, the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, the ministry of education and all institutions concerned with scientific research, including Kuwait University, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, and the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training, in addition to a team of Kuwaiti youth volunteers. He added that participants have completed innovative projects based on the methodology of scientific research, pointing out that these competitions and exhibitions encourage them to do more to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The first place in the first group, which includes the fields of social and behavioral sciences, biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, physics and astronomy, was won by student Dana Al-Azmi from Riqqa Secondary School for Girls for the project 'Safe shopping in the light of coronavirus'. In second place in that group was Najat Al-Rifai from Al-Qadisiya Middle School for Girls for the project 'Amazing chitosan', while the third place went to students Zeina Al-Shamlan and Asayel Al-Ajmi from Al-Rawda Secondary School for Girls for the project 'Removal of radioactive materials and uranium from groundwater using an ion exchanger'.

The first place in the second group, which includes the fields of earth, environmental and materials sciences and plant sciences, was won by students Fawzia Tayeb and Nabiha Abdullah from the Algiers Secondary School for Girls for the project 'Soil and climate of the future', while second place was won by students Aisha Al-Enezi and Farah Al-Mutairi from Shaimaa bint Al-Harith Middle School for Girls for the project 'The wasted treasure'.

The first place in the third group, which includes the fields of computational biology, bioinformatics, physical energy, engineering mechanics and environmental engineering, was won by students Fatima Al-Haddad and Farah Al-Asbah from Maria Al-Qibtiyya High School for Girls for the project 'Silent killer'. In the second place in that group, students Ghannam Al-Ghannam and Fadhel Karam from the Academy of Joint Talent for Boys won for the project 'Controlling and tracking car emissions electronically', while the third place was won by student Ali Malak from Mullah Hassan Al-Kandari Middle School for Boys for the project 'Plastic fuel'.

In the fourth and final group, which includes the fields of biomedical engineering, embedded systems, chemical energy, robotics, intelligent machines and systems software, the first place was won by students Bandar Al-Hajri and Mohammed Al-Zoubi from the Abdulrahman Al-Sumait Religious Institute and Secondary School for Boys for the project 'Portable respirator'. The second place was won by students Mazyad Abu Shiba and Mohamed Abu Zalouf from the Academy of Joint Talent for Boys for the project 'Oxygen'. - KUNA
